about the church
How did
Hope start?
We began as a church
plant of the Evangelical Covenant Church, started by Pastor Rodney
Walker with the goal of becoming a multiethnic, multicultural,
multi-social status church family with an emphasis on reaching out
into the Northwest Pasadena community. Our first worship gathering was
in March 2008 at the Jackie
Robinson Community Center in Pasadena, California.
What is your mission statement?
Hope Community Church is committed to actively
participating in God's mission, sharing love, hope, and mercy, and
engaging in life-changing community transformation.
What are your values?
For information on our values, see the "Our Values" page.
Who
worships at Hope?
Members of the Hope family come from a
variety of backgrounds. We have members from various ethnicities,
cultures, age groups, religious traditions, social statuses, and so on.
We worship a God who accepts all people, and we desire to do the same.
What kind of outreach and ministry does Hope do?
Most of our
ministry takes place in the context of our Covenant Mission Teams. For
information on other opportunities, see our "Serve" page.
What are Covenant Mission Teams?
Covenant
Mission Teams (or CMTs) are small communities of friends that gather
together for the purpose of doing ministry and sharing life together. We
encourage everyone at Hope to connect with one of our CMTs. For more
information, see our “Covenant Mission Teams” page.
How is Hope connected with Madison Elementary?
Hope
values the future of young people in the Northwest Pasadena area. As
part of this value, we have some strategic partnerships with PUSD
schools. At Madison Elementary School, we do a weekly Mentoring Through
the Arts program with a third grade class and a mentoring program with a
fifth grade class. We have also begun a relationship with Washington
Middle School.
What is your weekly schedule?
Our
Sunday worship
gathering takes place from 10:00am to 11:15am, followed by a community meal
from 11:15am to 12:15pm.
Our Covenant Mission Teams meet at
different times during the week:
- Sacred Spaces CMT: Sunday, 7pm-9pm - contact Kimberly Varner for details
- Washington Outreach CMT: Wednesday, 7:00pm-9:00pm - contact Donovan Waller
for details
- Active Hope CMT: Wednesday, 7:30pm-9:30pm - contact Broderick Leaks for details

Is Hope part of a denomination or
convention?
Hope is part of the Evangelical Covenant Church, a
historically multiethnic North American denomination founded in 1885.
We are part of the ECC’s Pacific Southwest Conference, a partnership of
Covenant churches located in the Southwestern United States. For more

about the sunday worship gatherings
Where is Hope located?
We meet for our Sunday worship gatherings at Madison Elementary School,
located at 515 Ashtabula Street in Pasadena, California. We meet in the
school cafeteria.
Wait, you meet in a school?
Yes! Sunday worship
gatherings happen in the school cafeteria, while many other events
happen in the homes of Hope family members. We do not own a separate building.
Where should I
park?
Parking is readily available on Ashtabula, the street
on which Madison Elementary School is located.
What should I
wear?
We encourage everyone who comes to Hope to dress
however they feel most comfortable for worship. Most members of the Hope
family dress casually.
What languages are used at Hope?
Our
worship gatherings are conducted mostly in English. We will often read
Scripture and sing songs in both Spanish and English, while sermons are
given in English. We have plans to begin a Spanish language Bible study
in the near future, and to begin having Spanish translation of the
sermon during the worship gathering.
So, what happens on a
typical Sunday?
